Burning smells reveal HVAC woes

You already know about the burning smell that may arise when you turn on the heater or AC after it’s been off for the summer or winter. It’s soon gone, once it disposes of the dust that collected on the equipment.

But smoky smells also indicate more serious problems with your HVAC system.

Even a dirty filter can emit a burning odor. Excessive dust and debris on the filter will slow the system’s operation and send a smoky smell through the vents. Fortunately the solution is simple: replace or clean the filter.

Bigger problems

Other smoke-related problems, however, will require an experienced HVAC technician unless you are an accomplished handyperson.

• A broken fan belt comes with sound effects as well as a bad smell. Just as a car’s fan belt will squeal after too much wear and tear, an aging HVAC fan belt can set off shrieking and smoke.

• Acrid smells indicate that electrical components have failed. If popping noises accompany the smell, turn off the system and call a professional.

• An overheated fan motor may lead to a smoky odor. Again, turn off the system and call an HVAC authority.

• A damaged capacitor may make noises and smell. It has other symptoms, too: vents not blowing the desired air, and operations become sluggish or completely stopped.
