Humidity poses danger to older people

The old saying “no sweat” could now mean you have a significant humidity problem, especially if you are a senior citizen.

If so, you need to stay close to an air-conditioner and maybe a dehumidifier in steamy New York City summers.

An AARP publication gives the lowdown on why sweat is good:

In dry weather any sweat has time to evaporate and keep you cool.

But in hot, humid weather the moisture in the air won’t let the sweat evaporate. This delays or eliminates any feeling that your body is cooling.

“Here’s what makes humidity so hard for older individuals: As you age, you don’t sweat as much, plus you have fewer active sweat glands. In fact, thermoregulatory sweating can decline by up to 25 percent in those over age 60, a 2023 study in Environmental Health Perspectives reports.”
