NYC temps to rise in the long term
That’s the prediction of the New York City Panel on Climate Change, which says the city will be hotter, rainier and wetter in coming years. Major shifts could hit in the 2030s, less than a decade away, the group said in a working paper.
A minor uptick in temperature can mean little short-term, but have significant impact over time.
“(A)verage temperatures at Central Park, for instance, have risen a quarter of a degree per decade since 1900 — meaning the city is about 3 degrees warmer than it was during the Gilded Age.”
The independent group includes 20 climate experts who study the latest science and offer strategies to address weather-related hazards.
With temperatures expected to continue rising, it makes especially good sense to install energy-efficient air conditioning and ventilation systems.
Heat isn’t just uncomfortable. About 370 people in New York City die each year of heat-related causes.
