What to do if gas heat fails
Here’s a checklist of actions to take if your gas furnace suddenly stops working:
• Turn off the gas in case a valve is broken or gas is leaking from the system.
• If the outdoor temperature is below 32 degrees, turn your faucets to a slow drip to keep them from freezing. Open the cabinets under your sinks to let warm air reach the inside pipes.
• Ask neighbors if their gas furnaces are still working. If not, this sounds like a systemwide problem.
• If you’re the only home with this problem, check to see if the thermostat is set to heat mode and if it’s at a temperature that should turn on the heat.
• Next, see if the circuit breaker somehow was tripped. Reset any tripped breakers connected to the heating system.
• Look at your furnace to see if there is some sign of malfunctioning. For example, is the air filter so dirty that it could be impeding the furnace’s operation?
If the furnace still doesn’t resume working you should contact a heating professional for advice.
