Why HVAC wires go bad

All sorts of malfunctions can happen when wires in your HVAC develop problems.

That’s because the network of wires delivers electricity to the thermostat, sensors, compressor, fans, condenser, evaporator and other components. A lot of wires are doing a lot of work.

Without electricity the components cannot do their job, and your heating, ventilation and air conditioning system won’t run efficiently.

As with any other device, an HVAC’s wiring can fray or wear out due to age and use. Don’t ignore this development. Damaged wiring causes short circuits and poses a potential fire hazard.

More causes

• Overheating: Short circuits also can be the result of an overloaded system. If it overheats, an HVAC’s wires can melt and cause potential fire hazards.

• Corrosion: If connections and wires corrode or disintegrate, the electricity will stutter rather than flow smoothly, giving you uneven heating and cooling and perhaps even shutting down.

• Poor installation: As the Department of Energy notes, far too many HVAC systems are installed incorrectly. Incompetent wiring can be a result.

• Loose Connections: Sometimes the problem just needs an easy fix – a few twists of the right tool. Live near an airport or a busy road? Vibrations gradually can loosen wiring connections.

Note: If you have a maintenance contract, all these conditions are on the checklist for the technician to correct if necessary before anything goes wrong.
